How I learned about this event
I met the main organisers, Linka Lin and Teri Horn, a few weeks ago at the Mentoring Women In Business Programme, promoted by my friend Caterina Meloni of Connecting Founders, and organised by the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women at the UNDP in July. I automatically clicked with Linka because she had such great energy and passion to help youth and female entrepreneurs. After the event she shared that she was volunteering to organised Startup Weekend Bangkok in August, a weekend where entrepreneurs spend 54-hours of build an idea, team, pitch deck, and pitch their final product before a panel of judges.
Startup weekend has finally come around, and to support I offered to provide a beauty bag of fresh homemade hair products and spread the word of this event to my friends. On Day 1, the teams were formed, and entrepreneurs created teams by pitching their ideas, followed by a round of votes (using stickers) and entrepreneurs with the most stickers went to the next round and formed teams to build the idea. I did pitch one idea , Date a Nerd, an app to connect "nerds" and "regular" people who don't usually meet, but I didn't get enough votes lol. Which was fine, because for the next 48 hours teams worked day and night to build the idea with the remaining 54 hour weekend pitch. I returned on Day 3 to listened to teams pitch, and listen to guest speaker and serial entrepreneur, Shannon Kalayanmitr discuss her journey as an entrepreneur. After 54 hours, the teams did a great job putting together their pitch deck and presenting their ideas. The winner was a team who created an app to tap into the billion dollar destination wedding market, by creating a platform to connect hotels and venues in Thailand with brides abroad. In fact I know the two leads of this team, and was very proud that they won! It was a great weekend, I learned I need to work on my own pitch and storytelling skills, and look forward to next year's Startup Weekend!
